Story focus

Specific voices.
Stories that connect.

RIM's creative focus begins with a story worth spending time with: a person making a difficult choice, a family under pressure, a community in change or an experience that asks us to look more closely.

We are interested in African stories with a clear point of view, a believable world and the potential to engage an audience through the quality of the film.

01 / Story focus

Contemporary life and human relationships

Family, belonging, ambition, responsibility and change offer rich territory for character led drama. We look for detail in relationships and settings, and for conflict that emerges naturally from the people at the centre of the story.

02 / Story focus

Suspense with a sense of place

A contained thriller can build tension through strong characters, purposeful locations and consequential decisions. We are interested in suspense that draws meaning from its setting and can be realised with a coherent production plan.

03 / Story focus

Documentary with meaningful access

Real lives, creative achievement, enterprise, places and cultural experience can provide powerful documentary subjects. The strongest starting point is a meaningful question, a relationship with the subject and a sense of what can unfold on screen.

04 / Story focus

Culture music heritage and imagination

Stories informed by music, history, literature or oral traditions need both creative interpretation and an understanding of their sources. We welcome ideas that combine cultural specificity with an engaging screen proposition.

05 / Story focus

A development conversation

These themes describe our creative interests. Individual projects will be introduced with their actual development or production status when appropriate.

If you are a writer, producer or rights holder, begin with a short introduction explaining the story, its setting, format and current stage. Tell us your connection to the material and what contribution you are seeking. We can then agree whether and how to consider further material.

Your next chapter

Let’s bring your next story into focus.

A film, a screening, a creative partnership or a learning programme. Tell us what you want to achieve.
