Directing

Give the story
a clear screen language.

Directing brings together the intention of a story, the world of its characters and the choices an audience experiences on screen. RIM offers a collaborative approach to suitable fiction, documentary and commissioned projects, with the directing role shaped around the brief and the production team.

We begin with what the film needs to communicate and how the creative choices can support it.

01 / Directing

From interpretation to performance

An agreed directing assignment can include script interpretation, a director's treatment, visual references, casting collaboration, rehearsal and work with performers. The aim is a coherent approach to tone, character, pace and the world of the film.

On set, directing connects the cast and departments around the scene. Preparation should make space for strong performance while giving the cinematographer, sound team, production designer and assistant director a shared understanding of the work.

02 / Directing

Documentary with purpose and attention

Documentary directing starts with a meaningful question and a relationship with the subject. We are interested in films that combine access, observation and careful research with an approach appropriate to the people involved.

Interviews, locations and archival material should contribute to the story. We consider how the filming process and later edit can preserve context and create an engaging viewing experience.

03 / Directing

Creative collaboration through the edit

Where included in the assignment, the director's involvement continues into editorial review, performance and narrative choices, and collaboration on sound, music and finishing. Preparation, shoot time, post-production duties and creative approvals are agreed as part of the role.

04 / Directing

A directing service matched to the project

RIM can discuss directing within its own projects or as a service for another producer. We also welcome introductions from directors whose creative approach and experience fit a developing RIM film.

The team and the assignment should support each other. Share your format, script or treatment stage, desired tone, proposed shoot dates and existing producing arrangements so that we can assess the fit.

A few useful answers

Before we begin.

Do you provide production as well as directing?

Production support can be discussed alongside directing. We define the two responsibilities clearly so you know what is included and who leads delivery.

Can we begin with a treatment or proof of concept?

Yes. A focused treatment, scene or short proof of concept can help develop the visual and performance approach before a larger production, where it serves a clear creative purpose.
